Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
