This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
