Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Dawn' for New York City in First Speech
On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his term.
A Historic Leader
The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

- A cap on rents for about 1 million households

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
